Following last weekends loss against Pulborough, the Sussex All Blacks were looking to get their first win of the league season. With the weather dry and the sun shining the SAB's did not disappoint!
The travelling side arrived with new signings and a different looking team. With several regular players missing due to injury, the excuses could have been easily found early in the proceedings of the day. The Burgess Hill side took to the field with energy, tempo and aggression and set their stall out for the match.
Uckfield were hit early in the match (9 mins) with a try from SAB's. The conversion was not added. 5-0 to the visitors. With some hard lines being ran by the back row from skipper Adam Rezazadeh and new signing Michael Tredgett this was causing the Uckfield side lots of problems and questioning their defence lines.
New signing, scrum half James Barruol was linking the forwards hard graft and the backs pace with some fantastic precision passing. With Vice Captain Chris Robson-Close stepping again into the fly half slot, the clean delivery of the ball was aiding him no end in releasing the back line.
A second try was added at 17 mins by centre Owen Larder, crossing the white wash with a bounce! 10-0 to Burgess Hill. Conversion was sadly missed. The SAB'S were starting to look fluid and smiles on the players faces were clear from the side-line.
At this point DoR, Ross Halifax had arranged for a Spitfire fly by.....helping inspire the Burgess Hill players!!
Another two tries were added to the toll for SAB's which included a debut try in the corner after a great support run from Ashley Dalmond following Owen Larders perfectly timed pass releasing the new signing across the line. Well done Ash!!
Uckfield were awarded a penalty in front of the posts just before the half time whistle, the score line at half time 20-3 to Burgess Hill.
The next 20 mins saw Uckfield pushing for the visitors try line. Uckfield capitalised on an earlier yellow card against Burgess Hill and with a chip over, the back tracking SAB's saw the Uckfield 12 under the posts to open their try account.
Score line 20-10 to Hill.
Then, in the last 20 minutes of the match two further tries were added by Burgess Hill which included a very strong run by hooker Ben Dewey who crashed over the line to the left of the posts. New Signing Tommy Maple was brought off the bench and showed promise on the left wing, we look forward to seeing his progression as a player! Well Done!
1st XV skipper Adam Rezazadeh was asked his thoughts on todays performance he said "the boys played a great game today, they put the pressure on Uckfield from minute one to eighty. The result is a reflection of the hard work and dedication the the players have put in and it was an outstanding squad performance, with loads of individual flare added into the mix! The youth and new faces coming through the ranks is fantastic!"
Full time 30 - 10 Burgess Hill win.
With a very exciting and enjoyable game to watch and with plenty of new faces, things just start to be stirring at Burgess Hill.
Thanks goes to all the travelling support and of course our very own touchline guru...Lenny Collingbourne! Well done Lenny!
Next week - Crawley at Burgess Hill - let's get the support down the club!
