Brighton 2s took the short journey inland to visit Burgess Hill in a league fixture. With the ground cleared by the Director of Rugby- Ross Hallifax to play and the Ref in agreement, the teams took to the field in something that ended up looking like a scene from the Somme!!
Brighton sitting nicely in the league, Hill had a bit of a task ahead of them.
Brighton opened the account with only 9 minutes on the clock with a try and subsequent conversion. 7- 0 to Brighton. With some up front battles of attrition going on and the muddy conditions not playing into the visitors hands, there was some back and forth to each end of the pitch. With Hill threatening the line on multiple occasions.
Brighton scored again just before half time and took the extras, 14- 0 to Brighton. Now Hill played up the slope.
An early Brighton try saw the lead stretch to 19-0 with no conversion slotted.
A good sustained period of possession from the home side and playing a simple, but effective game plan. Hill saw good in-roads into the opposition half. A half break from Cama (Fijian), followed with a nice off load to Cameron Stempt, a step, an off load to Hooker Ben Dewey!! saw Dewey cross the line to open Hills account. The Conversion was not added.
Hill suddenly up beat and some strong carries from Ben McClaren and Charlie Coles which again took on the visitors, yet another try was added to the tally by Cameron Stempt from close to the ruck. Fergus Collins was causing the Brighton side some issues in the lineout, with Ben Dronfield getting stuck in to the opposition. 19-10 to Brighton. Owen Larder stepping into the 9 position seemed to be helping with delivery to skipper Chris Robson- close with all the mud.
Looking to move forward, Hill stepped up and looked threatening and gaining yards into the opposition half.
Brighton intercepted a pass from Hill and scored under the posts!!! with the conversion .... full time 26-10 to Brighton.
All in all, a much better performance from Burgess Hill. With the sticky conditions the handling was good and the attitude was vastly improved.
With a League break now until the new year, the bodies to repair the Hill side can now build for the new year.
Well done to all involved on Saturday.
