Burgess Hill U12’s V Brighton U12’s

Chris Paine22 Oct 2024 - 19:51

The U12 boys kick off their season with a stirring 2nd half fightback

Burgess Hill hosted Brighton on a rather wet morning for the first league match of the season for the Under 12’s.
Despite the challenging conditions, all players were raring to go, and it was Brighton who came flying out with some slick forward play to pin Burgess Hill back in their own half.
There was some resolute defending from the home side, with Hill cleverly using the full width of the pitch to try and alleviate some of the pressure.
Brighton showed good line speed to close Hill down which eventually gave the away side the lead. This was sustained for most of the first half. Going in at half-time, Brighton led two tries to nil.

At half-time, coach Chris tinkered with the tactics and asked for much of same again as there was a lot to commend from Hill, as Brighton were clearly a well drilled and disciplined outfit.

The second half saw a more cohesive Burgess Hill, whose line speed and attacking play went up several notches. It was now Hill asking questions of the Brighton defence, who certainly had some sturdy units to break down.
The perseverance paid off straight from a ruck when Fin seized the opportunity to grab the ball off the floor and cutely roll over the try line to get Burgess Hill back in the game.
This elevated the home side and you could see the confidence it gave them. Brighton did have some moments and some persistent chasing from Burgess Hill prevented at least two more tries for the away team.
Burgess Hill carried on with the same speed and slick passing to push Brighton back. A tremendous run from man of the match Chester, saw him inch pass several Brighton players and expertly tap the ball down for the equalising try.
The last few minutes saw the home side on top, desperately pushing for the winning try. However, Brighton stood firm and the match ended two tries each (10-10). Probably a fair result on balance of play in both half's.

Hot dogs all round for the players were richly deserved and some post-match chat between players and coaches alike showed the importance of the social aspect of rugby.
It is worth noting how this match was played with complete respect and discipline from all of the players.
Both sets of coaches agreed how competitive, but how fairly the game was played. It was liquid-rugby, but not because of the weather!

Props to the referee (James) who had an excellent game. Controlled and considered to all.

Also to the parents who came to watch (despite the weather) and to all who helped out whether in the clubhouse with the refreshments & clearing up, or who helped outside with the setting/clearing up of the equipment. We really do appreciate your help!

Til the next match….
